Jewish Community of St. Gallen

The Jewish community of St. Gallen was founded in 1863 and has a long and eventful history. Today it is a publicly recognized unified community with approximately 120 members.

The community includes the very beautiful synagogue in Moorish style from 1881, the community center and a Jewish cemetery with a funeral hall and Tahara room for the washing of the deceased.

The board is responsible for the internal and external affairs of the congregation, working closely with the rabbi and various committees. The rabbi leads religious services and teaches religious instruction for children and offers courses for adults. He is a trusted contact person and is particularly attentive to the needs of sick and elderly members.

Services are held on Shabbat, holidays, Bat Mitzvah and Bar Mitzvah, and weddings.

The community hall is actively used for celebrations such as Hanukkah, Purim, and Passover, as well as for Kiddushim, educational events, and cultural activities. Various associations, such as the Jewish Women's Association, the Chevra Kadisha, the CJA (Christian-Jewish Working Group of Eastern Switzerland), the Swiss-Israeli Society of Eastern Switzerland, Kiryat Yearim (Swiss Children's Village in Israel), and the Round Table of Religions, are frequent guests in the community premises.
